ABOUT US-our ethos

Our ethos is to provide a peaceful, rustic, outdoor experience surrounded by nature and steeped in history.  We therefore want to attract guests who appreciate these qualities and are happy to abide by our rules (see full conditions)

Cotswolds camping is situated in the grounds of Holycombe Holistic Retreat Centre, the home of the owners, Sally and Andy Birtwell.  Here they host weekend residential retreats, weekday classes and holistic therapies, hence we are a quiet campsite. To find out more see Therapies. (under What's On header)

The campsite is on the site of an old Norman castle  - a Scheduled Ancient Monument,  with a water-filled moat and is close to many beautiful Cotswold Villages - a great base to explore the areas -  see What's on.

Cotswolds Camping at Holycombe

Holycombe (taking its name from combe ‘valley’ and the nearby Holy Well spring) is situated adjacent to Whichford Wood, which boasts a wealth of flora and fauna. It’s also located a short walk from the Norman Knight, a classic, award winning Cotswold pub, which serves excellent grub and has great live music nights. So after a walk in the woods, or a pint up the road, you can roll back here, light a campfire, in one of our handmade firebaskets and enjoy this peaceful and charming place.

Whichford Pottery is also a wonderful place to visit, where there is a stunning garden full of inspiring pots, the Octagon gift shop and the marvellous Straw Cafe. The food is seasonal, locally sourced, hand made, hand baked and even home grown when possible. They have gardening master classes and adult pottery workshops.

Our campsite has been the subject of years of planning battles, with a small minority of neighbours,  hence our desire for our guests to help us keep to our conditions and to inform us if anyone on site is jeopardising our future.

The history of the site

This is the ancient site of Whichford Castle, an English Heritage scheduled ancient monument. The moat is still there. Before the Normans, we know there was a Roman settlement as a Roman conduit leads from the wood to the moat. There was an excavation of the site in 1954 and a plan is in the camping kitchen for you to see. If you want to learn more about the history during your stay, you can visit The Market Hall Museum, Warwick, where there is more information about the site. You can see some old photos of the excavation in the camping kitchen
